A Cold Morning and a Warm Connection

It was a bitterly cold morning when one of our volunteers met Michael (name changed for privacy) near the town centre. He’d been sleeping rough for weeks after losing his job and, without family nearby, had nowhere else to turn. He told us he hadn’t had a proper meal in days and felt invisible to the world passing by.

When we handed him a care package, his first reaction wasn’t to look at what was inside — it was to look up, meet our volunteer’s eyes, and say, “Thank you for seeing me.”

Inside his package was:

• A thermal blanket

• Socks and gloves

• Hygiene essentials

• Nourishing snacks

• A voucher for a hot meal at a local café

These items didn’t solve every problem Michael was facing — but they did give him comfort, a moment of relief, and a reminder that he wasn’t alone. That moment of connection led to a conversation, and that conversation led to a referral to a local housing service.
